Unemployment is the major issue of concern that affects young people not only in Gilgil but in Kenya in general. Even those who make it to have a good education and complete college have not been spared either. And with the recent decision by the government to extend the retirement age from 55 years to 60 years has not made things any easier. Getting a job is by itself a big job. It is with this in mind that TRACE has a project component which is designed to equip the youths with business skills like enterprise management, Sales and marketing skills, record keeping and proposal writing. Proposal writing will go a long way in helping the youths to access youth loans from the Government while the management skills will enable them to know how to manage their small businesses once they have received the capital to do their business. This takes away the notion from young people of sitting at home waiting for jobs while they can use their skills and be able to access loans which they can use to start their small businesses and earn themselves a living.
PROJECTS IN ENTREPRENUERSHIP
Government youth loans – Youth Enterprise Development Fund
TRACE has trained several youths in Gilgil to access the Government Youth fund by giving them information on how to go about the process of applying for the Government youth loans. However the fund is still not flexible enough to advance start up loans to many of the youths.
Equity Bank Entrepreurship Training
The bank has trained members in basic business management skills including: book keeping, budgeting, sales and marketing. This has greatly built the capacity of youths in understanding how to start their businesses and managing them.
