This is a novel innovation that will seek to develop durable and affordable roofing tiles from the readily available, abundant and obnoxious waste from disposal sites in our country Kenya. Based on proven and well researched technology, TRACE will develop high quality ceiling tiles which can be sold to house developers to meet current high market demands, impacting positively to the environment and creating job opportunities directly in the manufacturing process and indirectly in the collection process.
Waste management in Kenya is very wanting. According to UNEP, the country generates over 10,000 tonnes of garbage daily with only about 8% getting recycled. Municipal landfills are full leading to increased indiscriminate disposal of waste in public spaces where they cause pollution and serious health problems to residents. At the same time about 50% of Kenyan youths are unemployed and have become hopeless. By using waste plastic and glass as a resource to manufacture eco-friendly roofing tiles, we will not only reduce pollution but create job opportunities in the recovery process.
We will also offer an economic roofing option for housing consumers in Kenya's rapidly growing real estate industry. We have leveraged on seed funding from United States African Development Foundation (USADF), expertise from engineers at Yale Center for Engineering Innovation and Design, local technical expertise, market connections through our wide local networks and commitment of dedicated Trace members to develop, produce and deliver this product to households in our Country Kenya. Our vision is to divert all the plastic and glass waste from the mainstream disposal facilities and therefore impacting positively to the environment while creating meaningful jobs to young people in the process.
